About five years ago, Vidor Rotary Club acquired a small bus that was being taken out of use in Vidor ISD. The bus was stripped of student seats and it's wheelchair lift, painted a cheery green, and outfitted with shelves donated by Taylor Made Custom Cabinets. With generous donations of books for kids aging from birth to eighteen, the bus was ready to roll. It began with one monthly visit to Waterfall Apartments, where dinner was prepared for children and books were checked out from the green bus.
Since then, Rotary has greatly expanded the services of the little green bus. In the summertime, the bus makes a trip out every Wednesday atnoon, visiting four apartment complexes to take sack lunches and books to children and youth. During the school year, the green bus will visit the same four places once each month to take a sack meal and of course, books. In addition, you can find the green bus out many other times during the year. The Rotarians take the bus to the Vidor Public Library's Summer Reading program finale, where books are awarded to each child who completes the library's summer reading goals. This year, more than a hundred kids got free books from Vidor Rotary Club on the bus.
The bus also gives out free books at Vacation Bible Schools and at each of two community-wide garage sales the Rotary Club hosts each year, and visited Skatetown's summer program to award books this summer. It participates in the Homecoming parade supporting our Pirates, and can be found at many other community events including the recent Lions Club Fourth of July bash at the community center park. In addition, Vidor Rotary Club joined forces with Young Audiences of Southeast Texas and Vidor ISD to offer a free summer reading camp the past two years. The children who participate in the camp receive two free books each week. "We want to encourage kids of all ages to read," says Vidor Rotary Club President Tim Andrews. "We also realize that many of them don't have enough to eat sometimes, and we try to help with that as well." Vidor Rotary Club is proud to keep that green bus rollin' rollin' rollin'!
