Two Vidor police officers who worked to save the life of a critically injured patient in March were honored Wednesday with the department's Life Saving Award.

Officers Manny Castillo and Dillon LaPoint were first on scene March 22 after a woman suffering a mental health crisis shot herself in the chest, the department reported.

The two officers used quick-clot bandaging to control bleeding and stopped a clot that was causing her lung to collapse, allowing the victim to be transported from the scene in less than three minutes once an ambulance arrived.

Having come in early before their scheduled shift times, neither officer was officially on-duty when they responded to the call.

"I feel grateful and I feel appreciated," Castillo said during a ceremony at City Hall. "It feels good to do something positive when there's a lot of bad things going on."
