The End of Another Chapter

Well, my last days as the City Manager of the City of Vidor certainly did not go as I imagined. When I accepted the job of City Manager for the City of Orange, I thought my last few days in Vidor would be more jovial, that I would spend my last few day reminiscing, laughing, thanking people, shaking hands, and hugging my friends. Thanks to Imelda, that did not happen.

Nevertheless, on October 1, 2019, Jill and I start a new chapter in our lives. While I look forward to the new challenges, I want to take a few moments to remember the last few years.
First, my sincere appreciation and thanks to everyone who allowed me to serve in this position since March 2013. It was a great experience. I know I am going to miss a few people, but I will hit some highlights.
Thank you to my wife, Jill, who allowed me to quit my profession of twenty years and start a brand-new career. And we had to move to do it, but our old house flooded twice, too.

Thanks to Mayors Ken Crawford, Robert Viator, and Kimberly Stiebig, along with the multiple City Council members with whom I have worked. I believe we always tried to do what is best for Vidor. Public service can be a frustrating, thankless calling, but we need good people who are willing to serve. It can be rewarding, too.
A very big "thank you" to the City employees with whom I have worked over the past six plus years. You have always been supportive of me and my ideas. I appreciate the cooperation and quiet guidance you have provided. You are where the rubber meets the road when it comes to serving the citizens. Nothing I have accomplished would have been possible without you.

The people of Vidor have been wonderful to me as they let me run their city. I sincerely thank you all. You are my family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Through good times and bad, you have given me your support. Both during Harvey and Imelda, you rose to the occasion and showed others the best side of Vidor. I hope we all continue to be as we are in the aftermath of those events: kind, wonderful, selfless, compassionate, and giving.
I look forward to serving the City of Orange, but as I leave, I want you to know I was honored and humbled serving as the City Manager of the City of Vidor. Thank you all.

Go, Pirates, go!

Vidor Children's Checkers Club

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME VIDOR CHECKERS?

The time has arrived for us to kick off season #2 of the Vidor Children's Checkers Club!

If this year comes anywhere close to matching last year's excitement and fun, we will be doing well. Last year, the Vidor Children's Checkers Club kicked off its' first year with a bang. We had plenty of members and plenty of fun learning the game of Checkers.

Checkers is a MENSA game that deals with solving problems, thinking, studying, analyzing, visualizing and competition. Our children advanced each week and we held several tournaments throughout the year and saw their level of play improve dramatically. To top the year off, our Club in Vidor hosted the USA National Children & Youth Checkers Championship. David Austin and Tessa Franks claimed the USA runner-up National Champions trophy. They both also won the Texas State Championship.

This club is for beginners, those with experience and advanced players. Our club has a Facebook site "Vidor Children's Checkers Club". Check it out to find out more information. If you would like for your child to participate, please come for our first meeting on Thursday, September 19 at Vidor Elementary School at 3:30 in Mrs. Waldrop's room. Be there to ask questions and find out for yourself what all the excitement is all about.

The club is taught by National Ranked and Texas State Champion Watson Franks. We will be training especially to compete in next summer's 2nd Annual USA National Children's Checkers Championship.

Orange County Citizens Work Together to Recycle Tires and Collect Scrap Metal

Building community partnerships across Orange County to improve our local environment and reduce litter is what Keep Orange County Beautiful is all about. On Saturday, July 27, KOCB partnered with The City of Vidor, Superior Tire and Service of Orange, and D&D Scrap of Bridge City to collect abandoned tires and scrap metal, at no charge to county residents. The event was a huge success!

Over 730 tires were collected during the 5-hour event at the Vidor Public Works yard on Watts Street. "The early birds met us about 7:00 AM with 5-6 trailer loads of tires", said KOCB Chair Deborah Bednar, "And it was non-stop from there on!" Mayor Kimberly Stiebig, Vidor City Council Members Angela Jordon and Bob Turner, along with Vidor City Manager Mike Kunst all pitched-in to unload tires and move them to the truck for recycling. Big Picture Mike Hughes from Superior Tire and Service said, "You guys wore out my crew! We never expected a turn out like this!" "Working together we filled the Superior box- truck four times and the pick-up truck three times!", said Vidor City Council Members Jordon and Turner.

D&D Scrap from Bridge City also collected over 9,500 lbs. of scrap metal during this event. "The loads came in sort of all mixed up", said Teresa Dollins, co-owner of D&D. When a load came in, the crew pulled off the tires first, then sent the vehicles on down to the metal station. "This is the kind of work we like to do. We got all sorts of material at this clean up", said Chris Dollins, co-owner of D&D. There was a bath tub, a bicycle, and appliances of all kinds that will now be safely recycled. The final stop for the clean up was a free toss into the roll-off dumpster behind the Vidor Public Works yard.

This is the second tire recycling KOCB has sponsored in 2019. 200 tires were collected in March at the Orange Boat Ramp, as part of the annual Trash-Off in Orange. The goal for the Vidor event was to collect 500 tires and scrap metal. That target was far exceeded. "About mid-morning we had 8-10 vehicles lined up to drop off tires and metal", said Vidor City Manager Kunst. Vidor Mayor Stiebig said, "This just shows how much we needed free clean-up day after Harvey."

Lunar Luminary - John K. Hirasaki

John K. Hirasaki drew the short straw and, in the process, won a job that put him front and center for one of humanity's greatest achievements.

Only four qualified engineers, you see, volunteered to expose themselves to any potential contamination found on the lunar surface, and Hirasaki (Lamar BS Mechanical Engineering 1964) lost the lottery. At the time of the Apollo 11 mission, Hirasaki worked for NASA's Landing and Recovery Division. He and his colleagues developed procedures to recover the spacecraft once it had splashed down in the Pacific and, far more dramatically, protect all life on Earth from the possibility of extraterrestrial bacteria or other potential hazards.

Beginning in July 1969, Hirasaki spent twenty-one days in quarantine with the Apollo 11 flight crew. During this time, he was tasked with processing and decontaminating the capsule, and he became the first person ever to handle lunar material as it was exposed to Earth's atmosphere. "When I opened the spacecraft," he recalled in a 2009 interview, "the smell was like Fourth of July after fireworks, there's that scent that you smell of black powder after firecrackers explode. It's also the scent—and this is the country boy speaking—if you strike two pieces of flint together…. I suspect what I was smelling was some slow oxidation or reaction of the lunar surface material with our atmosphere and humidity in our atmosphere."

This month we are highlighting Lamar's #lunarLUminaries to call attention to the varied contributions our graduates made to the #Apollo11 mission. Born in Vidor, Hirasaki grew up on his family's rice farm. "My education at Lamar," he explains, "was essential to being employed by NASA and having an opportunity to participate in the Apollo Program."

USA Children’s Checkers Tournament in Vidor

The time has arrived! The American Checker Federation has sanctioned the first National Children and Youth Checkers Tournament in many years and the location is Vidor, Texas. The date is this week, July 19-20, 2019. Players from across the United States are invited to come and challenge for the coveted right to call themselves the National Champion.

At stake is not the just the title, but also trophies, prizes, savings bonds and more. Coach Watson Franks of the Vidor Children's Checkers Club says, "We have been waiting for this moment for quite a while. Our children have worked hard in preparation and I think they are ready. We have some top quality players."

There will be two divisions in this tournament. The YOUTH DIVISION will be for ages 13-17. The CHILDREN DIVISION will be for ages 7-12. As an added attraction, there will also be a Division for 7 and under. Florida is sending a five-year-old in case we had a young player ready to go. The answer is yes! Coach Franks' grandson, six-year-old Tyler Franks is up for the challenge. It should be a fun game to watch. Both will be winners!

This tournament has been a dream of Franks for some time. The City of Vidor got behind this dream to make it a reality. The dream plans to continue after this year and become a yearly happening for area. It is hoped that this is just the beginning of a great tradition. Vidor is slowly becoming known not just in the USA, but across the World as a Checkers Capitol.

Checkers is known as a favorite Mensa game for centuries. It was a game of Kings in England played by Royalty and by Commoners. For decades in America, checkers was played at the county courthouse calling the elders to come and face off in a game of mental skills. It is said, that Checkers is an easy game to learn, but takes a lifetime to master. Other countries around the World have very large children checker organizations. It is taught in the schools and brings great crowds to large tournaments. Franks is hoping this same enthusiasm for checkers can catch fire in the United States.

The largest group that will be making the trip to Vidor this week is from Sunville Academy in Florida. They will be arriving on Thursday afternoon. They have prepared and are ready for some checkers.

The tournament will be held in the Holiday Inn Suites in Vidor. The tournament will kick off on Thursday evening with a play and greet time. The official tournament will begin on Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. with a brief meeting of players and parents. The rounds will be an hour and a half. There will be five rounds on Friday and two rounds on Saturday. Awards will be presented at the conclusion at noon on Saturday.

The highlight of the event will be a banquet on Friday night catered by Frankie's of Beaumont. It will be a time of fun, eating, and prizes.

Good luck to all contestants. Let's play some checkers! For more information call Watson Franks at 409-201-2543

Vidor commends two officers for saving woman’s life

Photo: Guiseppe Barranco

 By Alyssa Faykus

Two Vidor police officers who worked to save the life of a critically injured patient in March were honored Wednesday with the department's Life Saving Award.

Officers Manny Castillo and Dillon LaPoint were first on scene March 22 after a woman suffering a mental health crisis shot herself in the chest, the department reported.

The two officers used quick-clot bandaging to control bleeding and stopped a clot that was causing her lung to collapse, allowing the victim to be transported from the scene in less than three minutes once an ambulance arrived.

Having come in early before their scheduled shift times, neither officer was officially on-duty when they responded to the call.

"I feel grateful and I feel appreciated," Castillo said during a ceremony at City Hall. "It feels good to do something positive when there's a lot of bad things going on."
